Is it okay to live in a house with radon?

Every house has some radon, so the question is concentration rather than presence. Below 2.0 pCi/L there is nothing to act on. Above 4.0 the EPA recommends fixing it, and living there normally while the work is scheduled is fine.

Start with the framing, because "has radon" is true of essentially every building with ground contact. Radon is produced continuously by uranium decaying in soil and rock, it enters through the foundation, and outdoor air carries a small amount as well. The meaningful question is how much. The bands, in plain terms. Under 2.0 pCi/L is around the typical indoor average and there is nothing to act on. Between 2.0 and 4.0 the EPA suggests considering mitigation, which is a genuine judgment call and reasonably influenced by whether anyone in the household smokes and how much time is spent on the lowest level. At or above 4.0, the action level, the recommendation is to fix the home. Above 10, the same recommendation applies with more urgency about scheduling, though still not about evacuation. What "okay to live there" means in practice. It is fine to continue using the house normally while a test is running, while quotes are collected, and while an install is scheduled. Basement bedrooms are worth thinking about if the result is high and the work is weeks out, simply because that is where concentration is highest and where someone spends eight hours a night.
