I'm Sam Reynolds, and Central Ohio radon is my subject. I know the standards and the county data closely, and I put them into plain language for homeowners here: what a reading actually means, what a reasonable scope of work looks like, and which questions to ask before signing a quote.

The foundation is a short list of documents I know inside and out. ANSI/AARST MAH-2023 for measurement, ANSI/AARST CCAH-2020-0523 for mitigation design, the EPA Citizen's Guide to Radon for the 4.0 pCi/L action level and the 2.0 pCi/L threshold where EPA suggests considering mitigation, and Ohio Department of Health reporting on residential results. The local part matters just as much. Columbus sits on Devonian limestone and shale (the Columbus Limestone, the Olentangy Shale, and the Ohio Shale), all carrying enough trace uranium-238 to produce measurable radon as it decays. Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, and Union counties are all designated EPA Radon Zone 1, and roughly 1 in 3 Franklin County homes that get tested come back above the 4.0 pCi/L action level.

The pattern I keep returning to is that the housing stock tells you more than the county map does. Pre-1950 stone and block basements in Clintonville, Bexley, and Grandview Heights test high consistently. Newer slab-on-grade homes in Dublin, New Albany, and Powell often already have a passive radon stack stubbed in by the builder under Ohio's radon-resistant new-construction provisions, which turns the job from a full install into an activation. Heating season readings run higher than summer readings in the same house, which is why a borderline July result deserves a second look. None of that tells you what your own home is doing, so every page here lands in the same place: test first, and if the result calls for mitigation, use a contractor whose credentials you can verify.
